Anthology Press Release
Lavandería - A Mixed Load of Women, Wash, and Word is an anthology of written/spoken word and photography. It highlights the universal ritual and common interaction of people, places, and things found between loads of laundry. Celebrating the task often deemed “women’s work,” this unique collection of voices honors the unsung history of washer women, touching on everything from labor strikes and scrub boards to present day love affairs rinsed away in the automatic double loader.
Lavandería was conceived at the ZSPOT writer's workshop in San Diego, California in 2005. Members of the workshop formed the Wash House Collective, a group of artists, educators, and activists residing in San Diego, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
Donna J. Watson, lead editor of Lavandería teaches writing at San Diego City College and is a founding member and editor of City Works Press. She co-wrote, developed and directed the original showpiece situated at the center of the anthology.
Michelle M. Sierra is a writer, photographer and co-editor of Lavandería. She and Yukimi Levas-Anderson shot lavanderías in Tijuana, San Diego and Los Angeles and their visual images inspired the workshop writers to cull stories that “focus on the strength and beauty lying inside the history of families and their everyday environments.”
Lavandería will be released at the 2009 San Diego City College International Book Fair held at the Saville Theater on October 4th 2009. Authors included in the anthology will read between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. with a book signing afterward.
Lavandería was recently featured at a pre-release event in association with Third Root Poets and Mildred Rivera’s Anything Goes art exhibit at the Los Angeles City Market Gallery, 11th and San Pedro Sts. in downtown Los Angeles on September 12, 2009.
